What Fort Myers projects fill a dumpster

  • Storm

    Post-Ian rebuilds

Ian's surge in September 2022 flooded neighborhoods along the Caloosahatchee and wiped out much of Fort Myers Beach. Gut-outs, raised rebuilds and demolition continue.

  • Remodel

    Older riverfront homes

The McGregor Boulevard corridor and neighborhoods near downtown have older homes, many being restored or replaced after flood damage.

  • New build

    Growth to the east

Gateway, the Daniels Parkway corridor and areas toward Lehigh Acres keep adding homes, and construction containers with them.

Lee County debris and placement rules

  • City of Fort Myers, the Town of Fort Myers Beach and unincorporated Lee County each have their own rules. Check which one covers your address.
  • Homes in flood zones being repaired after major damage fall under FEMA's substantial improvement and damage rules, applied by the local building department.
  • A container in the street or right-of-way generally needs city or county approval.
  • Lee County runs a waste-to-energy facility and separate handling for yard waste and construction debris. Ask the provider what they cannot accept.
  • After a declared storm, separate vegetative debris, construction debris and appliances at the curb, and keep containers off those piles.

Local rules change and are enforced by the city or county, not by us or the hauler. Confirm anything that affects your job with the office named above before the container arrives.

Life after Ian

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Lee County in September 2022 as one of the strongest storms ever to hit Florida's west coast. Storm surge flooded neighborhoods along the Caloosahatchee and swept away much of Fort Myers Beach and parts of Sanibel. Recovery has been long. Some homeowners repaired quickly, some are still deciding whether to raise or rebuild, and many lots have gone from damaged home to vacant lot to new construction.

That has made Fort Myers one of the busiest dumpster markets in the state, with demand for everything from small containers for room-by-room repairs to 40-yards for demolition.

The 50 percent question

In flood zones, FEMA's substantial damage and substantial improvement rules, enforced locally, can require a home to be brought up to current flood standards if repair costs pass half the home's value. That decision changes the debris plan: a partial repair means smaller containers; a teardown means several large ones. Get the building department's answer first, then book the container.

The McGregor corridor and downtown

Older neighborhoods near downtown and along McGregor Boulevard, famous for its royal palms, have homes from the early and mid-twentieth century, many on the river. Restorations, additions and replacements are common.

Seasonal timing

Lee County's population swells from late fall to spring. Contractors are busiest then, and so are haulers. Summer is quieter but rainy, and it is hurricane season.

Before you call
